Inhaltsangabe | In WOKE IST BROKE, Pieke Biermann sets out on the trail of sensitive language, in particular the assimilation of US-American vocabulary in the context of social justice. Using examples from both German and English, Biermann asks what we actually mean when we talk about sensitivity in the current discussion about sensitive translating and describes the paradigm shift in which we currently find ourselves. She analyses enrichment through cultural transfer, but also addresses the fact that in Germany we adopt terms without an awareness of the underlying discourses of the country of origin. “And I still think the best way to avoid gurgling under in all the froth is still to have open, sharp eyes, a cool head, and knowledge. “Woke is broke” is what I’ve called all this – a quotation from the Black New York linguist John McWhorter, to whom I also owe some of the knowledge I display here. So, knowledge. In the beginning, as we know, was the word, so let’s start with words: WOKE.” |
